Mary Beth Zacks is June Member of the Month

Mary Beth Zacks
Mary Beth Zacks is the fourth JCC member to have completed the 300 Challenge.

When the "300 Challenge" was introduced at the JCC last year, few thought they could accomplish the challenge - modeled after the physical training that actors in the film 300 underwent before filming.

To those who dared, however, the reward has been a great sense of accomplishment. Mary Beth Zacks is the fourth person to have met the challenge, completing the course in 24:57. She is this month's JCC Diamond Family Fitness Center Member of the Month.

Q. How long have you been a member of the JCC?

A. I've been a JCC member for 25 years.

Q. How is the JCC part of your regular routine? What do you do when you come, and how much time do you spend here?

A. My routine includes coming to the center about 4 times a week, 30 minutes to an hour each time, early in the morning. I usually work out with Brian Saunders two times a week and go another 2 times on my own.

Q. What is your favorite activity in the Diamond Family Fitness Center?

A. First working out on the AMT machine, and then going into the weight room working with free weights. A major component of my workout is my iPod. I'm totally addicted to it! I put it on, focus and work as hard as I can.

Q. What is your favorite piece of cardio equipment? Favorite weight machine or exercise?

A. I love the AMT machine. It makes me feel like I'm running on air and is kind to the joints. I also love the captain's chair. In the beginning, I could barely lift my legs up, now it is one of my favorite pieces of equipment!

Q. Do you participate in any leagues or group exercise classes? If so, what are your favorites?

A. On Sunday morning, my favorite class is Matt Hood's HIT class. It helped me train for the 300 Challenge and once everyone found out what I was attempting it, they were so supportive. I have always enjoyed meeting new friends in the exercising classes. We're there Sundays at 11:30 a.m. - come join us!

Q. How does your participation at the JCC fit into your health and wellness lifestyle and fitness program?

A. It has brought me to a new level of fitness I never thought possible at my age.

Q. How has the staff at the JCC helped you to reach your goals? What kind of results have you achieved with your regular routine?

A. My friend, Sue Schnitz asked me last November to be her partner in the Amazing Race contest. I said, "Yes, but I haven't worked out in five years." It is the typical excuse, because as women, we tend to put ourselves last. So I met with Brian Saunders, Fitness Director to set up a few training sessions. I had never worked with a trainer, so I didn't know what to expect. Brian's education, talent and guidance showed me how to work out in the weight room (which I had "never" walked into in my 25 years at the center!).

I was intimidated and did not know how to use one weight or one piece of cardio equipment. Brian was patient and showed me how to work out and the importance of diet and resting different muscle groups after working with weights. I can now walk into the weight room without a second thought and workout on my own. That is a huge accomplishment for me!

In January, I set making the 300 Challenge as one of my goals. Being 51, I had my doubts, but my fitness level just improved week by week. I tried a few times and with each attempt, I worked harder and focused. It is definitely the most difficult physical and mental challenge I have ever done in my life, but with my morning workout friends (Joel Schwartz and Danny Bromberg), HIT class friends, family and Brian's support, I did it! I still can't believe that my name is on that board. I am humbled to be included with fine athletes as Adrienne, Mabi and Matt.

It is so important to be educated before you start your exercise program, especially if you start from ground zero like I did. I was fortunate that I stayed injury free, which is also a tribute to Brian, who knew when to push me and when I needed to rest. The JCC offers so much support from the trainers, staff and other members.

Today my goals are without bounds. I will continue to work hard and make being healthy and fit number one in my life!

Q. How would you describe the JCC to a non-member? What would you recommend most about the JCC to a prospective member?

A.The JCC is truly a community that offers programs for an entire family. You don't find that today where most businesses/non-profits cater to one segment of the market. What is great about the JCC is that literally the entire family can work out, swim, and have a full gym, indoor and outdoor pool available as well as countless other programs for all ages.

Q. What does being part of the JCC mean to you?

A. The JCC holds a special place in my heart. My husband, Benjy, and I have volunteered for years and our children have grown up at the center. Rachael and Michael attended the JCC Preschool program, Kaleidoscope after-school care, JCC Summer Camp programs, BBYO and sports leagues throughout their lives. Rachael is graduating from college in December, and Michael starts in August. I am proud of the fact that the center is part of their lives today and will continue into their 'adult' experiences.

What always has touched me about the Center is the youngsters and seniors coming together in one place. I love working out and seeing a senior member alongside a high school student. They are at different speeds and levels, but they are sharing in the same experience together. Pretty cool!
